What makes a good kitchen for a residential unit?
A good kitchen is one that can aid someone doing work in the kitchen. It is smooth and clean with things being able to be found easily to reinforce a smooth workflow in the kitchen. Below are some of the thoughts on what I believe makes a good kitchen design. This is based on my work so far and I am basing this on a kitchen for residential units.
Space/Counter Space
To start off it would be space. This does not mean a small kitchen is a bad kitchen design. It is about maximising the kitchen space. It is about making sure there is ample space for circulation and ample counter space. Both of these are important in terms of circulation in a kitchen. Having ample space around the kitchen can ensure that moving around the kitchen is not a hassle and can provide a smooth flow around the kitchen. Counter space also contributes to the workflow as having ample counter space increases the availability of work spaces for kitchen work. Apart from that it can also accommodate smaller kitchen appliances by fully maximising the counter space where kitchen can be done with the smaller kitchen appliances without keeping the appliances in and taking it out when kitchen work needs to be done.
Storage
Following space would be storage. Storage is essential in any kitchen and it can come from storage of of food to cookery and utensils. By having sufficient storage for the kitchen it can help free up some counter space that can be used for kitchen work. Storage mainly helps with organising the kitchen inventory making it easy for people using the kitchen to find the relevant items for their kitchen work. This includes having a dry food racks to having a fridge in a kitchen. Storage also helps the kitchen to be orderly and clean by clearing any clutter in the kitchen that might hinder the work in the kitchen. A good storage system in a kitchen can make the kitchen a smooth kitchen to work in.
Appliances
With reference to the previous post regarding carpentry, appliances play a part in keeping the kitchen smooth and clean. Expanding on this, they can also help clean up the kitchen space from a organisational standpoint. What this means is to places appliances strategically close to each other, making sure the transition in working in the kitchen smooth. As these appliances are organised, small zones are created. These zones can help make kitchen work smoothly especially when there is more than one in the kitchen working at the same time. It divides up the kitchen work smoothly while making sure everyone is connected with one another making working in the kitchen enjoyable.
Cleanliness
Lastly what I believe makes a good kitchen is one that is clean. This goes on every level, clean physically, organisational and design wise. A good kitchen design is one where it can expand out all the contents during kitchen work and retracts in all the contents when kitchen work is done. Regardless of design styles, a clean kitchen down to the details can be an asset and contribute to the design of kitchen.
To end this, these four qualities, working together can make a good kitchen design. There is no one specific way and a good kitchen design can also be one where you know what you want in a kitchen and being able to do kitchen work comfortably in the kitchen.
